There's a thread on Mibba where everyone's posting six word stories. It's all come from Hemingway, apparently - "For sale, baby shoes, never worn," or something. I don't know, dammit. But yes. I've been sitting there and kinda doing some out of boredom. And this would be the results.

Some of them are ambiguous, some probably make no sense, and some of them actually have mentioned names. They're kinda weird, but hey.

Eric sniffed, cheeks wet. Andreas left.

"Don't want to die," he whispered.

Biting tongue. Biting tongue. Shit, blood.

It looked so pretty in flames.

He dropped dead. Oh, how gorgeous.

His throat burned. The toilet flushed.

Tears stung his eyes; little needles.

The glitter's still in his hair.

Crying. Slicing. Bleeding. Screaming. Silence. Numb.

It tastes wrong. Tastes like failure.

He held his glasses like hands.

He chokes as red frames snap.

Inhale, exhale. In, out. Alive, dead.

As you may have read in the previous entry, an increase of 0.4 points or greater in the US headline (U3) unemployment rate has rarely occurred outside of actually being in recession. I wanted to take a moment to explore when it has happened before, and what the general dynamics were at that time, and compare that with September-October, as on the face of it, a deterioration in the labor market of the magnitude implied by such a rise pokes a big hole in the claims for an "unstoppable" recovery.

I'm going to lay out the facts. You decide. Here are the years and the months during which U3 rose by 0.4 points or greater. The outstanding month will be highlighted in red if it occurred during an official, NBER-defined recession. Also, any given years in which all 12 months were considered by the NBER to be in recession, that year's digits will be highlighted in red. Additionally, I am also including information on the overall U3 trend for any given entire year, ie: was the unemployment rate stastically lower (<-0.3% lower) "LOWER", about the same "SAME", or statistically higher (>+0.3% higher) "HIGHER," at the end of a given year than at its beginning.

1948 Jan HIGHER
1949 Apr, Jun, Sep HIGHER
1953 Nov HIGHER
1954 Feb SAME
1957 Oct, Dec HIGHER
1958 Jan, Mar HIGHER
1960 Feb, Sep HIGHER
1969 Dec SAME
1970 Oct HIGHER
1974 Aug, Oct, Nov, Dec HIGHER
1975 Feb SAME
1980 Mar, Apr HIGHER
1981 Oct HIGHER
1982 Oct HIGHER
1986 Jan SAME
1995 Mar SAME
2008 Apr, Jul, Sep, Nov, Dec HIGHER
2009* Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr, Oct* HIGHER**

*NBER has not yet declared the most recent recession over, but by far a huge majority of economists believe that it ended sometime over summer. ** While 2009 is not yet over, it already looks inevitable that the year will finish up with a statistically higher unemployment rate than it began with.

Some things that are made pretty clear from the above data:

  • No prior post-WWII recessions had so many months during back-to-back years with large jumps in the U3 rate than the most recent downturn.

  • During no year that the U3 experienced a single month with a large jump did the unemployment rate at the end of that year finish lower than it began with.

  • Recessions occurred frequently from the very late 1940s through 1960, and then their frequency moderated dramatically.

  • If combining the two deep early 80s recessions together and adding their totals up as one, even that results in less than half as many months with statistically large jumps in the U3 rate as has occurred during the most recent recession.

  • As unpleasant and jobs-destroying as they were, neither the 1991 nor 2001 recessions saw even one month in which the headline unemployment spiked by over 0.3 points.
  • If the 2007-? recession is indeed over, October 2009 will have been the only month during at least the last 60 years in which a given month soon -after- a recession had ended saw a statistically large monthly jump in the U3 rate. (See 1948 below for the only other time we have on record, but this was apparently related to the ending of the war effort)

  • January 1948 is a little unclear as we have no U3 data from the prior year, but GDP data from FRED does show that a mild contraction of GDP had occurred during Qs 1 & 2 of 1947, related to the unwinding of the second world war. The unemployment rate for 1948 as a whole began leveling out during spring, further suggesting that the increase over winter was left-overs from the prior year's ongoing war machine dismantling. However, the NBER does identify an outright PostWWII recession from Nov '48 - Oct '49, which this extreme monthly weakness preceded by about ten months, omen or not.

  • January 1986 appears to be a fluke, as the year for a whole ended up with about the same (actually even a little lower) unemployment rate than it began with.

  • March 1995 also appears to be a fluke, as that year for a whole ended up with exactly the same U3 rate it began with.

  • October 2009's implications remain uncertain, but it is clear that the year for a whole will end up with a remarkably higher unemployment rate than it began with.

Title: Addict Reading. (Working title)

Author: tattooedwoman

Beta: The super, special, awesome korppi_ravn

Pairing: Not necessarily a 'pairing' but it's still VAM.

Rating: PG-13 to be safe.

Summary: “WHERE ARE YOU Baaam-BAAAM?!?!”

Disclaimer: I don't own Ville or Bam. If I did, I'd be facing serious jail time.

Warnings: Minor drug use.

Authors Notes: This is a re-written story, the only thing I did was change the characters. And since some anonymous asshole decided to point it out, I DID write the original story. It was originally a fic based off of the characters from a game called Fatal Frame (Known as Project Zero in Europe.) It's very, very unrealistic, and off the wall. It's a crack fic.

So, it has been a LONG time since I made a manip but I wanted to try some Vam manips. Here are a few. I realized that I forgot a lot about photoshop so these are not as fab as I would like. I'll probably tinker with them some more but, because of my lack of memory about how photoshop works, they were pretty time intensive so I was anxious to share anyway.

Two more here )
Hope you all enjoy. :)

As I do a couple times a year, I went through my F-list and tried to pare it down slightly, as it was getting a bit large. I try to use LJ to keep in touch with people I know decently well, or am in relatively constant contact with; if we never talk, I might have removed you. Nothing personal, though. So if you were removed and would rather stay LJ-friends, please let me know! :)
